The Honors Program is recommended for students who 1) are considering graduate or professional programs that may require a completed honors thesis for admission, 2) are planning on or thinking about enrolling in the department’s integrated B.S./M.A. program, and/or 3) have a strong interest in, and commitment to, conducting original research in psychology and allied fields. An Honors degree in Psychology that includes a thesis is often required for admission to graduate programs in Psychology. In those programs that do not require a thesis, a research thesis is still considered a major benefit by admissions committees. An honors thesis offers a student the opportunity to carry out a research project under the supervision of a faculty member and his or her graduate students and to present the findings in a scholarly paper. The topic of the thesis will be based on a combination of the student's and the faculty member's interests. Whose interests will play a larger role in the final topic varies from student to student and across faculty members. Eligibility for Honors Program The prerequisite for participation in the Honors Program is an overall GPA of 3.3 for students who started out as a Freshman at UCSD. Transfer students from Junior Colleges are required to have an overall GPA of 3.5 and show a strong record of completing some psychology courses with high grades. Application Process in Fall of Junior Year In the Fall of the Junior Year the Department accepts applications to participate in the Honors Program. Application forms and additional information are available from the Undergraduate Student Affairs Office, McGill Annex, Room 1533. The application form must be turned in by October 31, (Halloween: You may come in costume if you wish). Each applicant will be contacted within two weeks with the results on eligibility to participate in the program. The Honors Program comprises at least seven courses: Prerequisites and/or concurrent enrollment: Prior to or during the junior and senior years at least one laboratory course (Psych 107, 109, 114, 115, 117, 118A, 118B, 119, 121, 127, 128) or, upon petitioning, two Psychology 199 Independent Studies culminating in a paper (199s, however, do not count as upper division credit towards the major!). Junior year: 1. Winter: Junior Honors Seminar Psych 110 2. Winter & Spring: Advanced Statistics & Research Methods Psych 111A&B Senior year: A year-long independent research project (Psych 194A, B, C) under sponsorship of a faculty advisor. The research culminates in an honors thesis. Although these courses are part of the minimum of the 12 upper-division course-requirement for Psychology, interested students should note that careful planning is necessary in order to finish the B.A. in four years. You can find out more information by reading through the catalog material and a department handout describing the program. You may obtain a written copy of the handout from the department's undergraduate student services office. |
