The purpose of this course is to provide students with both a broad and an in-depth overview of the field of experimental psychology. We attempt to achieve these conflicting goals by exposing students to a large variety of very different topic areas but cover each in a narrow, but detailed, manner. In this way, it is our hope that you will discover how psychologists actually think about a sample of the specific areas in which they work. Thus, this class will not provide a general overview of all of the theories and methods in psychology. Instead, it will provide a sample of the many different areas, each in considerable depth. The course also serves as an introduction to the work of individual members of the UCSD Psychology Department faculty, and as such, it can serve as a guide for students in selecting an advisor for their honor's thesis project. We do this by asking individual faculty members in our department to present one lecture based on his/her own work. This lecture will provide an explanation of the issues, methods, and results on which this faculty member focuses his or her scientific effort. The student’s job is to listen to these lectures in a critical and analytic manner to learn how research is conducted and how psychologists draw conclusions from their research methods and results. Course Requirements Readings: Reading for this course have been assigned by the individual faculty members participating in the Seminar as well as by the seminar coordinator. The readings are available on line from Library Reserves. Unless otherwise indicated, all readings are required. Papers: Each week students will be asked to write one short (2-3 pages) paper, on a subject related to one or the other of the two faculty presentations for that week. (See separate schedule). Papers will be graded by the presenting faculty or by the seminar coordinator. Grades will be based on your performance on these papers. We will try to have them ready for return in class the following Monday after the papers are assigned. All questions about your grade should be directed to the Coordinator. Attendance: Attendance at all lectures is required. Schedule of speakers: You can find the schedule of speakers for this year here. You can obtain the readings for each presenter either on the web, from the undergraduate affairs office, or directly from the presenter.
