About Dr. Kang Lee

For Parents

Who are we? What do we do?

We are researchers at the Institute of Child Study, University of Toronto. We are interested in what infants understand about themselves and others and how that knowledge develops over time. More specifically, we study something called "face processing". This means that we are interested in learning about how babies categorize, recognize and perceive human faces. For example, past research has shown that babies prefer to look at human faces over other objects and that babies prefer to look at female over male faces. We want to learn even more about how babies process faces. We ask questions like, “At what age can babies recognize their parents' faces?” and “Do babies prefer to look at infant over adult faces?”. Your participation can help us answer questions like these and many more!

But how can we tell what babies are thinking?

One of the most interesting and challenging things about studying infants is that they cannot answer questions or tell you what they are thinking. So how do we begin to understand what they are thinking? Past research has shown that babies tend to look longer and more frequently at new and interesting stimuli. At The Early Social Development Lab we use looking time paradigms to help determine what babies are thinking.

These faces are an example of the stimuli we use in some of our studies:

Who Can Participate?

At the Early Social Development Lab we study babies aged 0-9 months. We have many new and ongoing projects and are ALWAYS looking for infants to participate in our studies. Even if your child does not fall into the above age category you can still sign up! We will gladly add you to our database and contact you when an age-appropriate study begins. Most parents find their visit to our lab interesting and educational and choose to come back for future studies!

If you are a parent (or are expecting) and think you might be interested in participating please contact us today! Our research depends on your participation.
