Colored afterimages. Thanks to ROB van LIER and MARK VERGEER!

Nigel Daw (Nature 1962) showed that drawing a line around an afterimage makes it stronger.

Gaze steadily at the central cross for 15 seconds. Now briefly move the mouse over the picture for one second, and you will see a colored afterimage in complementary colors.. Remove mouse and re-adapt ad lib, maintaining strict fixation. The subjective colors in the afterimage can become as strong as the real colors.

And now, adapt to the plaid (below left), fixating on the central spot. There is only ONE adapting plaid, but Vertical test lines make the afterimage look pink/green, whilst horizontal test lines make the afterimage look blue/yellow. Likewise, the afterimage of the checkerboard looks pink/green or blue/yellow according to the position of the black test lines. So the afterimage looks different colors at the same place!
